Leviathan - 06/10 - Review of Jason FLZ, submitted at
In the wake of the horror sci-fi genre (headed by classics like Alien and The Thing) came a small sub-genre about the creatures that lay beneath the surface of the ocean. Two entries in this genre included the bland Leviathan and the even blander Deep Star Six. To head Leaviathan's score came the perfect composer suited to this genre; Jerry Goldsmith.

Goldsmith's score for Leviathan is truly a mixed bag. The horror side of the score provides some eery synth work, even including the calls of whales into the mix. The orchestra also comes in to provide a menacing atmosphere. The second half of the score features a broad, heroic theme for the main characters.

There really isn't much to mention or reccomend about Leviathan. The orchestra is nice when utilized, and the synths create a foreboding atmosphere. Unfortunately all of the other material is definitely not up to Goldsmith standards. If you want to see him try a better hand at horror, look to Alien. Ironically, a decade later, Goldsmith would return to the genre for Deep Rising, another bland effort.
