La Chiesa Keith Emerson - Goblin AMS Records– AMSLP92

'La Chiesa' (The Church) is a 1989 film, directed by Michele Soavi (who a few years later would be the director of the famous 'Dellamorte Dellamore', inspired by a Tiziano Sclavi’s novel and his comic book character Dylan Dog) and produced by the master of Italian horror Dario Argento, who also participated in the writing of the story and screenplay. As when it was released, the film elicits diametrically opposed reactions still today: some consider it a masterpiece of the genre, some others a poor product, the symbol of an era - we are in the late '80s - of decline and lack of inspiration.

The truth probably lies somewhere in between and 'La Chiesa', if we also consider that it was initially meant to be directed by Lamberto Bava, still defends itself very well, both from the visual and the musical point of view. The songs selected for this release are those composed by Keith Emerson and the Goblin, the latter being a pseudonym of the only Fabio Pignatelli.

The result is a stylistically homogeneous soundtrack, in which classical, rock and electronic sounds are skillfully blended. Emerson, in particular, makes extensive use of a church organ, mindful of his work for Dario Argento’s film 'Inferno' of a few years earlier (1980), while Pignatelli clearly shows his ‘goblinian’ soul, just updated by about a decade .

Given that this is the first-ever vinyl reissue, this release is basically a must-have for the soundtrack collectors, especially in the horror genre, where Italy is synonymous with quality once again. It also includes the two tracks 'Suspence chiesa 1' and 'Suspence chiesa 2', absent in the original 1989 LP.

'La Chiesa' è un film del 1989, diretto da Michele Soavi (che pochi anni dopo sarebbe stato regista del celebre 'Dellamorte Dellamore', ispirato a un romanzo di Tiziano Sclavi e al personaggio di Dylan Dog) e prodotto dal maestro dell'horror italiano Dario Argento, il quale partecipò anche alla stesura di soggetto e sceneggiatura. Ancora oggi come all'epoca il film suscita reazioni diametralmente opposte, tra chi lo considera un capolavoro del genere e chi invece un prodotto scadente, simbolo di un era - siamo sul finire degli anni '80 - di declino e di mancanza di ispirazione.

La verità probabilmente sta nel mezzo e 'La Chiesa', considerato anche il passaggio di testimone tra un Lamberto Bava destinato agli sceneggiati televisivi e Soavi, sa difendersi ottimamente, sia a livello di film che di musiche: nei brani selezionati per questa versione troviamo quelli composti da Keith Emerson e dai Goblin, sotto il cui nome si cela in questo caso il solo Fabio Pignatelli.

Ne esce una colonna sonora stilisticamente omogenea, in cui sonorità classiche, rock ed elettroniche sono sapientemente amalgamate. Emerson, in particolare, fa largo uso di un organo da chiesa, memore del suo lavoro per il film 'Inferno' di qualche anno prima (1980), mentre Pignatelli fa chiaramente emergere il suo lato più 'gobliniano', aggiornandolo di una decade circa.

Considerato che si tratta della prima ristampa in assoluto in vinile, questa riedizione è sostanzialmente imperdibile per gli appassionati di colonne sonore, in particolare del filone horror, in cui ancora una volta l'Italia è sinonimo di qualità. Sono presenti inoltre le tracce 'Suspence chiesa 1' e 'Suspence chiesa 2', assenti nell'edizione originale del 1989.
