The “lost” soundtrack to Alejandro Jodorowsky 1973 psychedelic masterpiece The Holy Mountain is getting its very first vinyl pressing. A casualty of Jodorowsky and executive producer Allen Klein’s decades-long stand-off, the soundtrack has acquired near-mythical status in its absence, but after patching up their differences the squabbling pair finally relinquished the tapes for release a few years ago, first on CD and now on vinyl.
The double LP contains the original cues, composed-to-scene by luminaries from the worlds of prog-rock, jazz and psychedelia. Finders Keepers questions its contents as follows: “The unreleased soundtrack to the most fantastic transcendental spiritual cinematic explosion of our time? The lost Don Cherry album? The missing Jazz Composers Orchestra album featuring Charlie Haden, Carla Bley and Frank Lowe? The Elephant’s Memory soundtrack follow-up to Midnight Cowboy? The lost soundtrack album secretly funded and A&R’d by John Lennon and Yoko Ono? The music to the film that George Harrison was sacked from because he didn’t want us to see his butthole?”
All these things are true, as outlined in the extensive liner notes written by Andy Votel, Thurston Moore, Kieran Hebden and others. The tracks have been mastered from the original studio master tapes via Record Plant, A&R, Sear Sound and Electric Ladyland. Jodorowsky recently had his semi-autobiographical novel published in English for the first time, and it sounds like a great read.
