Jaws 3-D - 06/10 - Review of Jason FLZ, submitted at
Unnecessary sequels have plagued many films and even went as far as soiling on the original work. Jaws 3 (or 3D if you really want to call it that) is a towering example. The film is awful in many respects, even costing the director his job. Bad Special effects, terrible acting, and a dumb story plagued Jaws 3. The only positive was the film's concept which was brutally butchered. For the score, it was fair that John Williams didn't want to continue on despite providing some of his best music for the previous two installments. Along came Alan Parker to fill his shoes.

One big question surrounding this score is; does John Williams iconic shark motif return? Yes and no. Parker does throw the main rythym of the theme throughout the score. The main theme itself is never played out. Speaking of themes, there is a soft love motif and a heroic melody representing Seaworld. It's all done in the style of Williams but the orchestrations are far too bland to get any real response. I would even go as far to say that the music feels like it was played half heartedly, it feels like it drags.

Alan Parker should be commended for trying to continue on the legacy created by Williams by composing like him. Unfortunately the music doesn't even come close to any of William's work for either the original or the sequel. Comparisons aside, Alan Parker's score for Jaws 3 is still bland all on it's own. The themes barely get any leverage and the material is very subpar. It's an honorable effort, but the result is pretty weak.
World CD premiere of original soundtrack from third installment of legendary shark thriller franchise, made in 3-D, directed by Joe Alves, starring Dennis Quaid, Bess Armstrong, Louis Gossett, Jr. Alan Parker hits on famous John Williams shark motif, then takes off on his own. Exciting score anchors with rousing, fanfare-theme for Florida Seaworld locale. Tender moments for Kay & Mike appear but bulk of score spells danger. Parker scores for full orchestra, often gives spotlight to vibrant French horn passages. In balance are ample moments for expected see-saw cellos & basses. Intrada presents all contents of original MCA label LP direct from original stereo album masters. Alan Parker conducts. Intrada Special Collection limited release of 3000 copies. Just remember... the third dimension is terror!
