The 1940 SPRING PARADE was Deanna Durbin’s eighth hit in a parade of perfect pictures. With a charming score by Hans Salter and Charles Previn, and songs by Robert Stolz, the vehicle was tailor made for the then 18 year old Durbin. In the film Durbin plays Ilonka, a peasant girl from the country side who buys a card from a gypsy fortune teller at a fair. It says that she will meet her true love in Vienna and is destined for a happy marriage. In Vienna Ilonka works as a baker's assistant and through a series of misunderstandings she meets a handsome army drummer who harbours dreams of becoming a composer and conductor. Ilonka secretly sends one of the drummer's compositions to the Emperor with his order of pastries and the film ends with the drummer achieving the success he deserves and the young lovers getting together.

We are particularly pleased the soundtrack recording of SPRING PARADE is now presented in its entirety; as it was never publicly released as a complete album. The six-12 inch set of 78 rpm records was privately pressed and given as Christmas presents to those that were involved in the making of the picture. Only 25 sets were pressed, making this the holy grail of original soundtrack recordings.

Also for your listening pleasure, we have added a promotional 'exploitation' record from three of Durbin’s films; SPRING PARADE, THREE SMART GIRLS, and THAT CERTAIN AGE. Included too is the opening song from SPRING PARADE, “It's Foolish But It's Fun” as performed by Durbin on a radio broadcast with the verse intact, which is not heard on the film. Another rare track included here is the recording of “When April Sings” which is the “complete” version unlike the shorter rendition heard in the film.
