World premiere of intense, shattering score for 1973 Philip D'Antoni follow-up to FRENCH CONNECTION, furthering story of sidekick Roy Scheider, also starring Tony LoBianco & one of cinema's greatest car chases. Don Ellis avoids pop seventies flavor, writes extremely tough symphonic score for strings, percussion. CD also presents special release of unused Johnny Mandel work for same picture. Mandel offers charged, albeit more traditional concept of urban action tale. Minor deterioration in stereo elements appears but intrusions aren't severe. Additional bonus offers premiere of brief but sobering, serious Johnny Mandel score for top-drawer Paul Newman courtroom picture THE VERDICT. All three scores presented in stereo from original 20th Century Fox vault elements, produced under supervision of Nick Redman. Don Ellis & Johnny Mandel conduct. Special limited release of just 1200 copies!

Johnny Mandel has passed away at 94.

The composer Johnny Mandel wrote numerous scores for film and TV between 50s and early 90s and was known for writing film scoring for Robert Altman’s 1970 M*A*S*H (movie and series).

The composer Johnny Mandel wrote numerous scores for film and TV between 50s and early 90s and was known for writing film scoring for Robert Altman’s 1970 M*A*S*H (movie and series).

Mandel has received five Grammy Awards: Song of the Year for Tony Bennett's performance of 'The Shadow of your Smile' and Best Original Score for The Sandpiper (1965), Best Arrangment on an Instrumental Recording for Quincy Jones' song 'Velas' (1981), Best Instrumental Arrangement Accompanying Vocal(s) for Natalie Cole's Unforgettable (1991) and for Shirley Horn's Here's to Life (1992).

His most famous compositions include “Emily”, Sidney Lumet’s The Verdict and Death Trap, John Boorman’s 1967 thriller Point Blank, Michael Apted’s 1979 thriller Agatha and Jack Smight’s 1966 crime drama Harper “A Time for Love”, Harold Ramis’ 1980 comedy Caddyshack, Hal Ashby’s comedy dramas Being There and The Last Detail, Disney’s original Freaky Friday and Escape to Witch Mountain movies and many more….
