Jerry Goldsmiths Freud is in eerste instantie een muzikale viering van het gedempt onaangename. De muziek is rustig en sluimert veel. Een enkele keer is er een kortdurende 'uitspatting' waarin het koper wat meer naar voren komt, zoals in "The Brothel" en "Freud's Trauma". Kenmerkend toch voor het album Freud is het grote aandeel van de strijkers die op een achterdochtige, schizofrene en soms spookachtige manier spelen. Goldsmith schreef geen hoofdthema, maar maakte composities met een meer verhalend en een op-, danwel afbouwend karakter.
In o.a. "Thirsty Girl" en "Cecily's Dream" komt een griezelig klinkend, op xylofoon gespeeld kinderdeuntje naar voren. Componist Richard Band kopieerde in 1985 exact deze melodie voor Re-Animator, een score waarin de componist ook Bernard Herrmanns Psycho verwerkte. Richard Band heeft het hergebruiken van Herrmanns werk veelvuldig toegegeven, maar over zijn hergebruik, of plagiaat, van Goldsmiths compositie voor Freud heeft hij nimmer iets gezegd...
Veel bekender is het feit dat regisseur Ridley Scott tijdens het maken van zijn film Alien passages uit de filmmuziek voor Freud gebruikte als 'temp track'; een tijdelijke score die onder een film wordt gezet om zowel de regisseur als de editor als de componist te inspireren voor het juist knippen en scoren van de rolprent. Veel van Jerry Goldsmiths composities voor Alien (1979) werden niet gebruikt. In plaats daarvan bleef zijn eigen werk voor Freud (1962) onder de eindversie van Alien staan. Die passages kun je op deze CD vinden in de "Main Title" en "Charcot's Show".
Freud... Al met al een geniale score die perfect de overdenkingen van een mens met een geplaagde mentale toestand onderschrijft.

For those who listened to Robert Townson’s 80th birthday tribute to Jerry Goldsmith on Sirius/XM Radio’s Cinemagic back in February, you heard a preview from this new album. Now, here’s the whole thing! Jerry Goldsmith received his very first Oscar nomination for his score for John Huston’s 1962 film FREUD.
An utterly brilliant score, Freud gave Goldsmith the opportunity to psychologically probe the human mind. He merged his own musical style with the Vienna school of Berg, Webern and Schoenberg to produce an agitated and thoroughly captivating work. Without question one of the most important scores of Jerry Goldsmith’s career, there were even cues from this score which found their way (much to Goldsmith’s chagrin) into Ridley Scott’s 1979 classic Alien.
Freud follows the career of the famous doctor (Montgomery Clift) as he leaves his work in Vienna to study hypnotherapy in Paris with Professor Charcot (Fernand Ledoux). After marrying (Susan Kohner) he goes to work with Dr. Joseph Breur (Larry Parks) to treat a young woman (Susannah York) and a young man (David McCallum) whose neuroses form the basis of Freud’s major theories and lead him to focus on analysis in place of hypnosis.
Now expanded from its original LP release, Freud comes to CD for the very first time!
