Harry Gregson-Williams is an English film composer also known for his works on the Metal Gear Solid series. Extensively musically educated, he attended music school from the age of six and later the Guildhall School of Music. He initially taught music and sports across Africa and later worked as a primary music school teacher in England. In 1993, he composed in the low-budget British thriller White Angel in his spare time leading to him becoming acquainted with veteran film composer Stanley Myers. Gregson-Williams worked as Myers' assistant on several projects and gained experience orchestrating music and sometimes writing entire cues.
Following Myers' death in 1995, Gregson-Williams was recruited to work at Hans Zimmer's Media Ventures studio in Los Angeles. He gained a high profile co-composing Hollywood movies such as The Rock, Broken Arrow, Smilla's Sense of Snow, Enemy of the State, and Armageddon. On these projects, he demonstrated his capacity to blend electro-acoustic action compositions with emotional thematic orchestrations. On subsequent animated projects such as Antz, Chicken Run, Sinbad, and the Shrek trilogy, he showed a flair for creating humorous compositions and using vocal themes.
Gregson-Williams was chosen to lead the score for the cinematic action game Metal Gear Solid 2: Sons of Liberty after Hideo Kojima enjoyed his work on The Replacement Killers. He created a dark and futuristic sound for the game's cut scenes and also offered an iconic orchestration of the series' main theme that has since been used in many game music concerts. Following the soundtrack's strong reception, Gregson-Williams returned to work on Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater and Metal Gear Solid 4: Guns of the Patriots. He also produced the main theme for the video game Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare.
In recent years, Gregson-Williams has left Hans Zimmer's studio to form an independent music production studio with his brother Rupert. He continues to work on diverse projects such as Kingdom of Heaven, Man on Fire, Team America, Flushed Away, Bridget Jones 2, The Number 23, and The Chronicles of Narnia titles.
