Review of Chris R., submitted at , score: 7/10
Cloud Atlas took an interesting step in its musical direction. As with its directors, its compositional duties were handed down to three different composers. This idea outside of the movie may seem weird but it actually helps with the intertwining stories. You have the simple piano pieces, to the lavish orchestra pieces, to the high techno pieces for the future. it is weird to think that the three composers actually collaborated on a main theme and kept it consistent through their styles of music for the different time periods. There are times where the simple piano playing reminds me of a Clint Eastwood score(Not A good thing) but it quickly passes. My main problem with the score is that with all the intertwining story arcs the music doesn't really evolve any of the established themes it set out to create. Its there but that is all it does and the fact that the greatest renditions of the theme are at the beginning of the film and at the end of the film. There is truly nothing in the middle section of the score that compares with these performances. Which is weird because for the connection between all three composers theme, they don't expand on it, which makes this score just slightly above listenable.
