Men in Black 3 - 06/10 - Review of Chris R., submitted at
I find that in all the movies Danny Elfman has done, non has been more complacent than the Men in Black series. The first one introduced us to a great title theme, and for the most part had some surprising turns in it. The second one was pretty much the same, but went in a more jazzy direction. So now we deal with the sequel that nobody asked for, and a score that to match. For the most part the the main theme is brought to the table again, though this time with an electric guitar playing beneath the theme. Now at first it sounds like an intriguing idea and it does work, but by the end the flashy gimmick becomes annoying and when the score ends on the Main Theme Revisited I couldn't give too hoots. Now add that to a mix that sounds a little off and you've got something that sounds surreal and not in a good way. The rest of the score is littered with filler that, thank the lord, is more easier to digest and a hell of a lot better than the filler of Dark Shadows. I often thought that of the two movies Danny Elfman did that tried to recapture the eras of the films Dark Shadows did a better job, the electronic elements flowed better and the synth played and blended better with the orchestral music. But for all the irritating things about this score, it has some nice ideas but really poorly integrated, listenable, but not much of a replay value. The movie has its moments and so does the score, and really thats all anybody could ask for.
