Moonrise Kingdom - 06/10 - Review of Chris R., submitted at (English)
The bulk of the narrative of this movie is based on tracked in songs and in all honesty given the quirky nature of this movie it works. Alexandre Desplat composed music for this movie but to be honest it is based only in seven cues. All the cues can actually just be considered a symphonic movement, for with each one more and more is added to the quirkiness. The bubbly theme is for the two young lovers and the town in general. It gets its biggest payoff in The Heroic Weather Conditions of The Universe 4-6: Thunder,Lighting, Rain. With the approach of the storm, Desplat really lays on the choral work and on film works terrifically. The final cue After the Storm operates like an in film version of The Young Person's Guide to The Orchestra. The actor goes through each of the individual instruments that makes up the main theme. Overall it is hard to judge just Desplat's work for the short amount. It is light, bouncy, and with the typical Desplat layering of instruments and the interesting musical textures, but it really won't leave much of an impression to those not into the artistic style of movie.
