Setting the tone for what may well be the best ensemble comedy of all time, the music of 'It's a Mad, Mad, Mad, Mad World' evokes a farcical circus or, as composer Ernest Gold described in an interview on the VHS special release, a sort of merry-go round. It is mostly orchestral, with some tracks using Mexican-inspired instrumentation and motifs. Incredibly, there are only about 34 minutes of music in a film that lasts about 3 hours; in the ears of this reviewer, truly a case of less is more.
