Shadow Conspiracy - 08/10 - Review of Jason FLZ, submitted at
By the late 90's Bruce Broughton managed to grab a few larger projects than usual. One of which happened to be the big flop Lost In Space while the other was a political thriller called Shadow Conspiracy. Starring Donald Sitherland and Charlie Sheen, the film centered around an assasination attempt on the president. Interesting about the score was that Bruce Broughton was known more for scoring kid's films and westerns, not thrillers.

Despite a lack of major experience on scoring these types of films, Broughton actually handles the material fairly well. The film's main theme (heard first in 'To The White House') is a strong brassy theme that sounds like a cross between the theme for 24 and Broughton's own Lost in Space material. Broughton reprises the theme numerously throughout the score in several different variations to great effect. As for the suspense music, it is well done. It ranges from suspenseful underscore, to menacing brass, to explosive chase music. Unfortunately, the album's middle half feels more like filler than anything else.

While not as good as various other thriller scores, Shadow Conspiracy is a noble effort from Bruce Broughton. The main theme is fairly memorable and the suspense music is well done, but alot of the cues in the middle of the album range from mediocre to ok. Overall, a good score from Broughton, despite the lags.
