Considering that many of the best performances of Johnny Mercer's music derived from Capitol Records, of which Mercer was a founding partner, this double-CD set fares amazingly well. Fred Astaire's version of 'I'm Building Up to an Awful Letdown' makes for a delightful opening number, and Columbia does possess Mercer's own recordings of 'Bob White (Whatcha Gonna Swing Tonight),' 'Jamboree Jones,' and 'Murder of J.B. Markham.' Astaire, Billie Holiday ('Say It With a Kiss,' 'When a Woman Loves a Man'), Tony Bennett, Mel Tormé, Doris Day ('Just Too Marvelous for Words,' with Harry James and His Orchestra), Dinah Shore, Aretha Franklin, and Rosemary Clooney ('On the Atchison, Topeka and the Santa Fe'), are among the top performers on this 42-song collection, which covers a multitude of styles and periods from the 1930s to the 1960s. We're also treated to Stubby Kaye's rendition of 'Jubilation T. Cornpone' from Li'l Abner, and Harold Arlen's own version of 'Blues in the Night,' perhaps the best-known of Mercer's songs from the swing era. The sound is okay, but nothing too special, just clean and clear.
