This is, in some ways, a more interesting body of work than that represented by the first volume. First, in addition to work with Richard Rodgers, it also includes songs written by Oscar Hammerstein II in association with Rudolph Friml, Sigmund Romberg, et al. ('Rose Marie,' 'Desert Song,' etc.). The material ranges from the 'Carousel Waltz' (performed by the New York Philharmonic under Richard Rodgers' baton) and the 'March of the Siamese Children' (by Louis Lane and the Cleveland Pops Orchestra) to 'Do I Hear a Waltz' by Elizabeth Allen, along with material such as 'Indian Love Call' by Nelson Eddy and Dorothy Kirsten, and Robert Goulet's rendition of the 'Soliloquy' from Carousel. Jon Cypher (Big) and Julie Andrews perform 'Ten Minutes Ago,' and Kaye Ballard ('The Farmer and the Cowman'), Theodore Bikel ('A Puzzlement'), Juanita Hall and Ed Kenney ('You Are Beautiful'), and Danny Kaye ('Two By Two') are all here, with a dozen others. Notes would, as always, have enchanced the purpose and value of this release. In contrast to some of the other parts of this series, however, the quality of the mastering is generally very good -- and (for those who care) these are almost all modern, stereo recordings, for a change.
