Resident Evil: Afterlife - 01/10 - Review of Jason FLZ, submitted at
In 2002 the game Resident Evil was brought to the big screen to the disappointment of the fans. Somehow, this critical travesty manged to spawn 3 sequels which received equal disdain from the critics and fans alike. As for the music, take it or leave it. Each score is mostly the same thing, electronic beats upon action motifs. Be it Beltrami or Clouser, you get mostly the same thing. You either love it or you hate it. (most film score fans hate it) With the most recent installment, however, the music has actually become worse. It is awful.

Rather than review the score in terms of the individual tracks and various themes, I will just focus on the sound itself. (because that's all this is;sound) Composer company Tomandandy decided to make a strange decision and drop Marilyn Manson's familiar theme for the franchise and put in it's place...

...nothing.
There are no new themes or motifs. The entire score is made up of harsh electronic sound pounding out beats and rthyms much in the way Tyler Bate's Halloween 2 score did. It sounds terrible. Occasionally you might get about 30 seconds of pounding guitars mixed with screeching synth score (if you are lucky). The closest thing to 'music' on the album is the occasional appearance of a distorted piano. I will admit that it is actually painful to listen to this. Tomandandy has managed to create the harshest, ugliest, and painful sounds to come out of any music studio. There are around 40 minutes of this lifeless score for anyone brave enough to actually try and listen to this abomination.
