Soundtracks are all about setting a mood, so right away you know what to expect from one called The 40-Year-Old Virgin. Sure, it could try to portray the psychological complexity of the situation (though that would be a little creepy), but silly is definitely the safest and most-expected course. And 'silly,' 'safe,' and 'expected' are the three words that best describe the The 40-Year-Old Virgin CD. You don't need to see the movie to imagine what kind of scene might accompany Michael McDonald's 'Ain't No Mountain High Enough,' Lionel Richie's 'Hello,' and 'Never Surrender' by Corey Hart. Of course the downfall of using obvious music is that it mirrors the title character's plight all too well. While his--um--maturity may be a little stunted, one could say the same for the musical maturity of this disc. The world got over 'I Ran (So Far Away)' by Flock of Seagulls decades ago, but some in Hollywood never did. This CD is great for goofing around--you just might not want to pop it in when you have a special someone coming over.
