Written, directed and produced by veteran Austrian filmmaker Kurt Mrkwicka
(pronounced mur-krish-ka), Majestic White Horses traces the evolution of the
Lipizzans in a stunning behind-the-scenes production on the Spanish Riding
School of Vienna, spiced with legends, history and extraordinary camera work.
'My vision was to bring together a ‘summit meeting,’ the highest quality of
motion picture, the most aesthetic animal, and the highest quality of riding
art,' said Mrkwicka, who personally funded 80 percent of the $4.4 million
budget. Mrkwicka likes to ride when he’s not making movies (which he’s been
doing for 35 years) and both his wife and daughter compete in dressage.
Filming in Saudi Arabia, Morocco, Spain, Slovenia and Austria presented
logistical challenges as varied as acclimating a herd of Lipizzan yearlings
to the notoriously loud IMAX® camera operation ('Think of a very large
cappuccino coffee machine,' Mrkwicka said.), shooting a break-neck ride with
Spain’s carriage driving champions (the four-horse team was filmed from in
front and behind), and transporting 12 tons of equipment to Morocco and
Spain.
The 40-minute production is narrated by actor Stacy Keach, with a score by
Emmy Award-winning composer Laurence Rosenthal.
