InnerSpace - 08/10 - Review of Jason FLZ, submitted at
Among the effects driven films of the 80's, one of the most visually impressive projects was the Fantastic Voyage-esque Innerspace. Despite some of the most realistic human body effects ever created, a great ensemble cast, and a fast paced script the film has remained largely unknown. For film score fans, this also came as a bit of an issue considering Jerry Goldsmith's score went unreleased for quite some time. After dozens of rabid Goldsmith fans praying for a release, La La Land Records granted their wishes with a massively comprehensive score album. In short, it was a very welcome release.

Like most of Goldsmith's scores during the later part of the decade, Innerspace relies alot on synthesizers. The film's main motif is a creepy sonar like ping representing the shrinking technology featured in the film. For themes, there is a broad six note heroism melody which gets full use in 'The Charge'. There also is a synthesized romantic motif, a dark metallic theme for the main villains, a smaller 5 note motif for the main heroes, and a wacky western melody for the mysterious Cowboy. The action melodies throughout the score are intense as well, although not as refined as Goldsmith's material in Total Recall. Much of the softer underscore heard throughout the film is a nice combination of synthesizer and orchestra.

Innerspace was a release long in the making. Fortunately, the outcome is very pleasing. Goldsmith's clever themes get enough leverage throughout the score. While Innerspace is a fun score, it certainly doesn't showcase Goldsmith's real talents for writing music. It's fun, but not as strong as many of his other releases. Overall a fun score for Goldsmith fans.
Presenting the world premiere score-only release of renowned composer Jerry Goldsmith’s (THE OMEN, PATTON, BASIC INSTINCT, GREMLINS) original score to the beloved 1987 Warner Bros. sci-fi/action-adventure/comedy INNERSPACE, starring Dennis Quaid, Martin Short, Meg Ryan and directed by Joe Dante. Goldsmith’s classic mix of synth and orchestra finds the perfect pitch of suspense, adventure and romance to propel Dante’s wonderfully off-beat genre mash-up. Produced by MV Gerhard and Mike Matessino, and remastered by Mike Matessino from WB vault elements, this definitive release of INNERSPACE features more than 50 minutes of previously unreleased music, and includes exclusive, in-depth liner notes by Dan Goldwasser and Jeff Bond (with new interview comments from Joe Dante and others). Limited Edition of 3000 Units.
