In the 1950s there were only a handful of films produced in Britain that could lay any claim to the status of musical. One such film As Long As They're Happy (1955) starred the effervescent Jean Carson (later known as Jeannie Carson). Jeannie had become a star overnight in her 1952 West End stage appearance in the hit musical Love From Judy.
With an original score by American composer Sam Coslow, As Long As Theyre Happy was adapted from a popular stage comedy which satirised the crying crooner phenomenon of the period. Jack Buchanan, star of the original West End production, repeated the role of staid London stockbroker John Bently whose quiet suburban lifestyle is disrupted when his youngest daughter Gwen tricks American crooner Bobby Denver, played by real-life crooner Jerry Wayne, into visiting her home in Londons Wimbledon on the pretext that its to sign a film contract with J. Arthur Rank. Jeannie Carson plays Pat, the other daughter.
Musical highlights include Carsons show-stopping number My Crazy Little Mixed-Up Heart; the luscious Diana Dors cavorting with Jack Buchanan in the Hokey-Pokey Polka, and Buchanans winning performance of I Dont Know Whether To Laugh Or To Cry Over You which the debonair Buchanan pulled out all the stops with ineffable finesse.
Jeannie Carsons next film was the delightful musical comedy An Alligator Named Daisy, a film she co-starred with Donald Sinden and Diana Dors. The films screwball farce is enhanced with songs by Sam Coslow and Paddy Roberts. They include the finger-snapping Crocodile Crawl performed by Ken Mackintosh and his Band, and Carsons powerhouse performance of In Love For The Very First Time.
Jeannie went to America where she won a starring role in the NBC television musical Heidi which aired on October 1, 1955. Heidi was adapted for the small screen by Neil Simon, and songs include Greener Pastures performed by Carson, which today she singles out as being a personal favourite, and I'm In Love With Me performed by co-star Robert Clary. Naturally these rare gems are contained on this CD along with a selection of Jeannie Carson's commercial recordings from the 1950s.
