Hellraiser III: Hell on Earth - 07/10 - Review of Tom Daish, submitted at (English)
It would appear that with Hellraiser III, the rule about the third in a trilogy being a bit of a duffer (think, Return of the Jedi, Godfather III, Alien 3), or at least not as good as that which preceded it, was broken. Hellraiser II turned out to be a bit of a mess, but by all accounts, Hellraiser III managed to reprise the best parts of the original into another flesh ripping yarn. I don't know if it was a timing conflict or a desire not to become typecast into horror film scoring (in which case, a wise move), Young was replaced for part three by the somewhat unfamiliar Randy Miller, who, it turns out, is not a lecherous maker of flour, but an experienced composer and arranger. The latter would seem to be appropriate as much of Hellraiser III's score is based on Young's original scores.

I'm not sure if this was the case with the earlier films, but it is evident that rock and metal songs were used in Hellraiser III, including some by the charmingly titled, Chainsaw Kittens. However, Miller's score is very much in the same vein as Young's, even using his three note main theme on a number of occasions (although it doesn't appear to be credited as such, maybe it was deemed too brief to constitute a theme). One notable aspect is how much more heavy handed, at times, the approach seems to be, the first few tracks are an almost continuous barrage of choir and brass. Perhaps the most ingenious addition to the aural palette are glissando choral swoops that have a hair raising effect, but used infrequently enough to ensure their impact is high on each occasion. The central tracks are a little more low key, akin to the score for the original, but Mind Invasion ups the ante once again, leading to the monumental conclusion. The final track does end rather abruptly, it just stops.

Evidently, Miller's brief was to write something that continued the tradition of Young's scores and for that we can't fault the results. On its own terms, this is a hugely impressive, gothic horror score, with churning, brooding passages and explosive climaxes. Like Young, Miller wisely eschews shock tactics and orchestral stingers to keep proceedings operatic and melodramatic. The only time it suffers, is in comparison with Young's scores, which provided Miller all the basic materials on which to pen his effort. It also lacks the sexual tension and brilliantly sustained sense of dread evident in Young's efforts, although the former is likely a due to the film's subject matter than anything else. Still, some of Miller's own inventions are striking and effective, as such, can be recommended.
