Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen - 05/10 - Review of Jason FLZ, submitted at
As far as guilty pleasures go, Steve Jablonsky's score to Transformers is one of my guiltiest. The broad, orchestral rythms representing the autobots versus the harsh, choral melodies for the decepticons sounds great. While one could say that Transformers was a stereotypical media ventures score, you could also argue that it is one of the better ones. With Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, however, that's not the case.

The score to TROF is a major disappointment in all regards. The two major with the score, in this case, is the fact that the music is so stale and that all of the orchestral elements that worked so well in the previous entry are replaced here with heavy metal guitars and endless synth. Jablonsky also abandons many of the themes from the previous film. Ironically enough, the most interesting track on the album is 'Nest', a collaboration between Jablonsky and Linkin' Park. The closest Jablonsky ever gets to reaching the level of 'Transformers' is with; 'Prime', 'Einstein's Wrong', 'Heed Our Warning', and 'Tomb of the Primes.' A new identity for the villain of the film (featured in 'The Fallen' and 'The Fallen Arrives') is simply groaning synth mixed with ugly heavy metal sounds. As for the action music on the album; 'The Shard' and 'Forest Battle' make up 4 minutes of harsh, painful sounds.

I tried really hard to like the score to TROF, but considering that the music has become nothing more than guitars and synth, it's not worth a listen. All of the great work he did for the first film is completely thrown out the window and becomes nothing more than a cheap Media Ventures score.
