Labyrinth - 08/10 - Review of Jason FLZ, submitted at
Labyrinth was an inredibly creative effort when it was released in the 80's. The Jim Henson directed fairytale was a unique combination of puppetry, good songs, and live action. To provide the score was fantasy composer (and also providing the score for the other Jim Henson feature, The Dark Crystal) came Trevor Jones. The album release features about 15 minutes of score and 20+ minutes of songs provided by David Bowie.

To start off, the songs on the album are pretty fun. 'Underground' and 'Within You' are rock ballads with Bowie's haunting voice flowing through. One of the song highlights is 'Magic Dance', an upbeat pop song with Bowie providing the baby noises. For Trevor Jone's score, the music is mostly 80's style synth. Wailing guitars and keyboard music support the score, and it actually works better than some of the more generic 80's synth.

While there isn't too much to say about Trevor Jones's score for Labyrinth (considering there is only 15 minutes released) the album presentation as a whole is pretty good. David Bowie's songs all sound mystical and haunting, yet fast paced. Those who are not big fans of 80's music or David Bowie in general may actually enjoy the songs. All of the score music is pretty fair well off, albeit a little outdated. Labyrinth is a good effort from both singer and composer, but it definitely isn't Trevor Jones's best score.
