Poltergeist II: The Other Side - 06/10 - Review of Andreas Lindahl, submitted at
Some argue that Goldsmith is a master at combining the sound of the symphony orchestra with synths, using them as individual instruments, rather than as ambient sounds. I beg to differ. Goldsmith's use of electronics are above all annoying. The composer's score for Legend would have been so much better without the annoying, dated synths. The music for Poltergeist II was written around the same time as the score for Legend and features the same kind of annoying use of synths. Unfortunately.

The most interesting elements in Poltergeist II are the ones reused from the score for the first film - with focus on the sweet theme for Carol Anne - and the Omen inspired choral pieces, especially the dark "They're Back", which features a chanting choir, supported by orchestra and subtle electronics. Terrific music.

For a horror score there's a rather surprising amount of beautiful, lyrical music. "Late Call" is a highlight and includes a beautiful new theme, performed by strings and synths that actually sound OK, supported by a soft harp. It's one of those dreamy Goldsmith cues, and is reminiscent of the composer's music for Legend and Medicine Man. Very good. And the catchy and very lovely theme for Carol Anne closes the album, in a very good concert arrangement.

When it comes to more horror sounding music there are some standout cues worth mentioning. Apart from the already mentioned "They're Back", Goldsmith delivers some really scary and uneasy music in tracks like "The Worm" and "Back to Cuesta Verde". The score also has its fair share of ambient underscore and this is where Goldsmith goes a little wild with the electronics.

Compared to the score for the first Poltergeist film, this is the weakest of the two. Goldsmith's score for Poltergeist is a modern classic and was, not surprisingly, nominated for an Academy Award. So if you have to choose, for some reason, go with the first one. And if you already own the out of print 1993 Intrada release of Poltergeist II, there's really no reason to get this new expanded version released by Varèse Sarabande. Unless you're a "gotta have it all" type of person. Which we all are, more or less, of course.
