Lakeshore Records will release the ROOM – Original Motion Picture Soundtrack digitally on October 16th and CD November 27, 2015. The film, which earned the People’s Choice Award at the 2015 Toronto International Film Festival, features original music by Stephen Rennicks (FRANK, WHAT RICHARD DID). In addition to the original score, the soundtrack also features Brie Larson’s performance of “Big Rock Candy Mountain” and “The Mighty Rio Grande” performed by This Will Destroy You.

At once a taut narrative of captivity and freedom, an imaginative trip into the wonders of childhood, and a profound portrait of a family’s bonds and fortitude, ROOM is a beautifully transcendent experience based on the award-winning global bestseller by Emma Donoghue. Director Lenny Abrahamson (FRANK) remains faithful to the novel while bringing Jack, Ma and their entirely singular world to heart-pounding and intensely cinematic life. ROOM demonstrates the triumphant power of familial love even in the darkest of circumstances, and is sure to take its place among the most emotionally affecting films to ever explore the bond between parents and children.

“Lenny and I began to feel that Jack's voiceovers, which offer us glimpses into how Ma has turned their tiny confined space into a world full of possibility and stimulation for her son, should have a musical element that would help to represent his unquestioningly benign child's view of everything he encounters,” Rennicks described.

For over sixteen years, award-winning Irish composer, Stephen Rennicks, has been crafting inimitable soundtracks for the best of independent cinema and television in Ireland, the UK, Europe and America. ROOM marks Rennicks’ fifth collaboration with celebrated Irish director, Lenny Abrahamson, whose 2014 cult hit, Frank, earned Rennicks several awards for his score and songwriting, including a British Independent Film Award and the Best Music Award at Les Arcs European Film Festival. Their first feature film collaboration, Adam and Paul, won Best Film at the 2004 Irish Film and Television Awards. They collaborated again in 2007 on Garage (Best Film at the Torino, CICAE Art Cinema Award at Cannes) and What Richard Did in 2012, a film praised by the international press and awarded the Golden Tulip for Best Film at the 32nd Istanbul International Film Festival. Frank, released in 2014, saw the Rennicks-Abrahamson collaboration hit a new high. A film with music at its heart, Rennicks’ songwriting, score and musical direction were unanimously praised, and the film’s soundtrack, released on Silva Screen Records, was named number three in Mojo’s top albums of 2014.

Rennicks’ scores will appear on two other highly anticipated films of 2015, Paddy Breathnach's Irish-Cuban feature, Viva, which has been selected as the Irish entry for Best Foreign Language Feature Film at the 88th Academy Awards, and Maya Zinshtein’s Forever Pure, the extraordinary feature-length documentary on the transfer of two Chechen Muslim soccer players to Israel’s Beitar Jerusalem F.C.

Both highly suspenseful and deeply emotional, ROOM is a unique and unexpectedly tender exploration of the boundless love between a mother and her child under the most harrowing of circumstances. ROOM tells the extraordinary story of Jack (Jacob Tremblay), a spirited 5 year-old who is looked after by his loving and devoted Ma (Brie Larson). Like any good mother, Ma dedicates herself to keeping Jack happy and safe, nurturing him with warmth and love and doing typical things like playing games and telling stories. Their life, however, is anything but typical—they are trapped—confined to a windowless, 10-by-10-foot space, which Ma has euphemistically named “Room.” Ma has created a whole universe for Jack within Room, and she will stop at nothing to ensure that, even in this treacherous environment, Jack is able to live a complete and fulfilling life. But as Jack’s curiosity about their situation grows, and Ma’s resilience reaches its breaking point, they enact a risky plan to escape, ultimately bringing them face-to-face with what may turn out to be the scariest thing yet: the real world.

“The challenge was to find a piece that could celebrate Jack's positivity without being entirely in conflict with the horror of his situation that we as the audience are so aware of,” Rennicks explained. “This was the key in many ways to the rest of the film's score because we could dial things up and down from there, as Jack begins to discover that there is more beyond the walls, roof and floor of his world, the music moves away tonally from the initial rendering of his voiceover theme.”

Element Pictures’ Ed Guiney (THE LOBSTER, FRANK, WHAT RICHARD DID) produced ROOM with David Gross (WHAT IF, GOON). Executive producers are Andrew Lowe (THE LOBSTER, FRANK, THE WIND THAT SHAKES THE BARLEY) for Element Pictures and Jeff Arkuss (WHAT IF) and Jesse Shapira (WHAT IF, GOON) for No Trace Camping. Emma Donoghue, Rose Garnett (Film 4), Tessa Ross (Film 4), and David Kosse (Film 4) also serve as executive producers.

ROOM is an Element Pictures and No Trace Camping production, in association with Film4, Telefilm Canada, and Bord Scannan na hEireann/the Irish Film Board with the participation of Ontario Media Development Corporation. A24 will distribute the film in the US, and Elevation Pictures is distributing the film in Canada. UTA handled the domestic sale. FilmNation Entertainment handled all international sales.
