« The good german » est un film qui fit le buzz en son temps, et la musique de Thomas Newman fut célébrée, ce qui donna à sa carrière un nouveau coup de pouce.
Ici, le compositeur ne déroge pas à ses habitudes. Thomas Newman demeure le roi de la vignette, du format court. Dans « The Good German », les plages n’excèdent que rarement 1'30. On admire encore comment, en quelques secondes, Newman produit une ambiance, tend une émotion ou déploie une tension. Chaque morceau est un concentré narratif.
Le revers de la médaille, c’est que l’auditeur ne se pose jamais dans un développement, et les deux thèmes principaux, malheureusement, n’arrivent pas à s’imposer.
La bo est presque entièrement pour orchestre, ce qui était assez rare pour Newman à l’époque. Exit ses recherches sur le design du son. Et c’est aussi la limite. Car si la musique est très bien composée, les instruments acoustiques enlèvent à Thomas Newman une part de sa richesse.

In the ruins of post-WWII Berlin, U.S. Army war correspondent Jake Geismar (George Clooney) becomes embroiled with Lena Brandt (Cate Blanchett), a former lover whose missing husband is the object of a manhunt by both the American and Russian armies. Intrigue mounts as Jake tries to uncover the secrets Lena may be hiding in her desperation to get herself and her husband out of Berlin.
Tully (Tobey Maguire), a soldier in the American army motor pool assigned to drive Jake around Berlin, has black market connections that may be Lena's way out - or lead them all into even darker territory.
An homage to the Golden Age of film noir thrillers, The Good German is a glistening reflection on a bygone era of film. The absolutely brilliant score by Thomas Newman is likewise cut from the cloth of such Golden Age masters as Max Steiner and Miklos Rozsa.
Based on the novel by Joseph Kanon.
