Dr. No’s soundtrack is not only the legendary 'James
Bond Theme' composed by Monty Norman and
arranged by John Barry, but also the Kingston Calypso
performed by epic Jamaican band Byron Lee and the
Dragonaires.
This famous 'James Bond Theme' launched the
career of John Barry. This composer was born in 1933
in York (northern England) and was taught to play
Jazz by Bill Russo. He then wrote the soundtrack of all
the James Bond films until the 80’s. But John Barry also
scored The Persuaders!, Out of Africa, Dance with Wolves…
His Romantic style streaked with jazz is identifiable
between thousand. He died of a heart attack on
January 30th 2011. His successor David Arnold
declared on BBC: “I think James Bond would have been far
less cool without John Barry holding his hand.”
The film opening theme is the “James Bond Theme”
but the opening sequence also features a bongo drums
interlude, and ends with a calypso version of Three
Blind Mice called Kingston Calypso, played several times
in the film. These tracks are performed by Byron Lee
and the Dragonnaires.
