COSA AVETE FATTO A SOLANGE?(1972) Is a famous classic Giallo movie with the direction of Massimo Dallamano. It has various English titles like WHAT HAVE YOU DONE TO SOLANGE? And TERROR IN THE WOODS or THE SECRET OF THE GREEN PINS. The teacher Henry (played by Fabio Testi) is having an affair with his student Elizabeth (Cristina Galbó), and he takes her out on a boat trip. They witness a knife killing on the shore. More bloody murders of girls are taking place by an elusive ‘Catholic priest’ in a residents college. The police and teachers cannot locate the killer and Henry becomes the main suspect. At the start the movie is a bit slow, but turns out to be one of the best Italian Giallo films, with the style so close to those of Dario Argento . Ennio Morricone wrote a perfect score for this drama with the most romantic music. The eerie avant-garde music makes the film even more intense. The score starts with a sensitive main theme vocally supported by Edda dell’Orso theme that will be added to various Morricone compilation albums. The track Cadenze is for solo organ underlines the priest at work. The so called difficult music in the score is not as you might suspect atonal music. There is a lot of melodies in the tracks, but without the film sometimes it is hard to swallow. Ennio Morricone in those days was a member of the Gruppo Di Improvvisazione NuovaConsonanza, a group of composers specialized on improvisations of abstract music. This music style returns on some tracks on the score. However, the music in general is not too hard to listen to. The track Fragile Organetto is a nice Luna Park theme for organ and Anche un quartetto per lei is an interesting piece for bassoon and small orchestra. Una tromba e la sua notte is a track with a jazzy like rhythm and has various psychedelic tunes on various instruments. So a score with great variety in music.

The film SPASMO is a Giallo movie directed by Umberto Lenzi in 1974. Christian (Robert Hoffman) and his girlfriend discover a woman’s body on the beach that after an investigation appears to be again alive. The next day Christian meets her again at a party on a yacht and he is falling in love with this unknown woman (Suzy Kendall). After the party the two went to a motel and just when they want to go to bed, an armed intruder comes in to hit Christian, but he reacts, grabs the gun from the intruder and he accidentally shoots him. After an hour the corpse seems to have disappeared and this is the beginning of a series of bizarre events. The effects in the film are gross, the complications vague and the plot is highly unlikely. It is a weird film, yet an interesting Giallo movie. Ennio Morricone has written the score for another Lenzi movie MILANO ODIA: LA POLIZIA NON PUO’ SPARARE. For SPASMO the Maestro has composed and orchestrated a very original score, full of tension on dissonant music of contemporary art. He has used electronics andhigh-pitched strings to give the film an uneasy feeling and it works great. In the film the tracks Samba do Desprezo from AD OGNI COSTO (1967) and La diva from COME IMPARAI AD AMARE LE DONNE (1966) have also been used. Bruno Nicolai has conducted the orchestra in the recording studio. The cd has a good balance between the psychedelic music and the easy listening music. A single was released in 1974 with the track Bambole Sijbold Tonkens.
