This month TER presents the re-release of their acclaimed Elisabeth Welch Collection.
In the five years since her death Elisabeth Welch's reputation has done nothing if not grow. A star of the stage and screen since the 1920's she was both an acclaimed actress and singer. In film she was Paul Robeson's leading lady in the 1930's and a star turn in Derek Jarman's 'The Tempest' in the 1970's. Likewise musically she traversed both genre and style, from sultry jazz, to swing and soul revues, musicals and Broadway showstoppers, performing versions of songs by Irving Berlin and Cole Porter that the writer's themselves were to claim as definitive.

These four recordings present a variety of her work. Her acclaimed songbooks of Irving Berlin and Jerome Kern, a live recording from the Carnegie Hall in New York, and a collection of her own favourite love songs, featuring songs by Cole Porter, Noel Coward, George Gershwin, Stephen Sondheim and Lennon and McCartney amongst many others.

Elisabeth Welch is a legend in musical history and her legacy continues to burn bright with every new torch song and jazz singer that covers the songs that she was privileged and able enough to truly call her own, many of which feature on these TER collections.
