Woman Thou Art Loosed - 09/10 - Review of John Mansell, submitted at (English)

This gripping tale integrates the emotions of romance, love, trust, drama and suspense into its storyline, and fuses all of these elements into one heart rending and gut wrenching parcel. The film tells the story of lies and deception and the damage that secrets can do to what seems like a perfect relationship. A couple seem to have the perfect life until one fateful day their young daughter is kidnapped and over a period of 7 days we see them begin to unravel secrets about each others past which threaten to tear their relationship apart. Composer Mark Kilian has penned not only an infectious sounding musical score for the movie but also one that contains many emotions which include, drama, excitement and themes which are of a tender and romantic nature. The soundtrack is one that posses an array of instrumentation, which are supported and embellished to great effect by the utilization of synthetic sounds and samples. The opening cue, ON THE FIRST DAY is for me one of the scores highlights, it contains so many components and also has a sound to it that is both romantic, homely and comforting, but at the same time it has an underlying sense that all is probably not right. The composer puts to affective use, strings, and solo piano which are enhanced by synths. Track 3, REMY ARRESTED, is a more upbeat cue, the composer bringing into play some hard edged strings and driving percussive sounds that together create a highly dramatic effect and atmosphere, again electronics are utilized to bolster and further embellish the proceedings adding depth and even more dramatic content to the composition. Track 4, HAPPY FAMILY, is I suppose what one would expect from a track with a title such as this, melancholy reins within the cue, syrupy strings and pensive sounding solo piano work together to establish a sound that is settled, pleasant and I suppose comfortable. Track 8, KIDNAPPED is a an inventive and cleverly orchestrated cue, it begins with a half heard childlike sounding music box of sorts and segues into driving percussion which is punctuated and supported by an ominous sounding wind instrument that itself receives support from strings, the cue builds and builds in tempo and volume reaching a dark sounding crescendo, which fades back into the distant sounding music box motif making this short lived track both inventive and exhilarating. Kilian,s score is a veritable assault on the senses as it relays so many emotions and contains so many inventive and haunting passages, this is definitely one for your collection.
