This release presents the original Mános Hadjidakis soundtrack music to the classic 1960 Jules Dassin film 'Never on Sunday'. A Greek-American coproduction, the movie starred Dassin himself along with Melina Mercouri and Giorgios Fountas.
The film tells the story of Ilya, a self-employed, free-spirited prostitute who lives in the port of Piraeus in Greece, and Homer, an American tourist from Middletown, Connecticut — a classical scholar enamored with all things Greek.
The title song and the bouzouki theme of the movie became hits during the 1960s and garnered the composer, Mános Hadjidakis, an Academy Award for Best Song. Mercouri won the award for Best Actress at the 1960 Cannes Film Festival.
In addition to the complete soundtrack, this edition includes 13 different versions of the movie’s celebrated theme song. Don Costa’s reading reached
number 19 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1960, then returned to the Billboard Top 40 when reissued in 1961. The Chordettes’ version reached number 13 on the Billboard Hot 100 chart in 1961. Dalida’s French rendition of the song topped the French singles chart in 1960. Melina Mercouri’s vocal recordingof the theme song from her 1962 movie Phaedra has also been included as a bonus.
