Immédiatement après Le Professionnel (Georges Lautner, 1981), Ennio Morricone illustre un autre film français, Espion, lève-toi (1982), dirigé par Yves Boisset qu'il connaît depuis L'Attentat (1972). Si les deux films ont des points communs, outre les dialogues exceptionnellement sobres de Michel Audiard (espionnage, personnage menacé puis broyé par le système, fin tragique), il n'en est pas de même pour la musique.
Autour de 3 thèmes principaux, le compositeur installe un climat particulier dont il a le secret, soit tendu soit « nocturne » et nébuleux, mais toujours abordable. La percutante Marche en la, richement déclinée, soutient le film dans les moments d'action et de menace. Sentimentaux et doux, les thèmes Mélodie pour Anna et Bugle pour Anna accompagnent la femme mais aussi la fragilité, l'aspect simplement humain et conjugal du personnage central joué par Lino Ventura, en deux variations très différentes. Le troisième thème par son tempo lent et ses tons graves semble décrire le mystère, les méandres des services secrets et ses sourdes menaces.
Comme toujours avec le Maestro, les timbres sont importants et chaque instrument soliste apporte une couleur particulière qui se distingue dans un ensemble pourtant cohérent. Ici l'atmosphère est signée d'abord par le bugle d'Oscar Valdambrini (présent dans les 3 thèmes), puis le pianoforte, le basson, les percussions et les flûtes.
L'album original General Music sorti en 1982 comportait 8 titres, ainsi que la chanson Canción del Fuego non composée par Morricone. S'y ajoutait un autre morceau (Ombres suspendues) provenant du film Le Secret (Robert Enrico, 1974), donc non repris ici. En 2000, le CD du label italien Screen Trax proposait une version plus complète sans la chanson. Pour cette nouvelle édition supervisée par Claudio Fuiano et Daniel Winkler, Music Box Records est reparti d'un meilleur master stéréo retrouvé en Italie, et propose la version intégrale comprenant trois morceaux inédits et la chanson. Une occasion de redécouvrir cette musique avec un son optimal.

Even if both films have common points, apart from the dialogue written by Michel Audiard (secret services, main character menaced and then crushed by the system, tragic end), it is not the case about the soundtrack.
Through three main themes, the composer creates a tense atmosphere but always accessible. The powerful track Marche en la, through many versions, sustains the movie in moments of action and menace.
