Il fiore delle mille e una notte (1974)

La cugina (1974)
IL FIORE DELLE MILLE E UNA NOTTE

Director Pier Paolo Pasolini finished his trilogy, after THE CANTERBURY TALES (1971) and THE DECAMERON (1972), here ARABIAN NIGHTS in 1974. The ancient erotic and mysterious tales of the Middle East inspired this film. Franco Merli plays the main character, a boy named Nur Ed Din who falls in love with a girl slave (played by Ines Pellegrini) called Zumurrud who really selected him as her master. After having been separated, the two meet again only at the end of the movie. The story is unreal, the movie is realized like a dream full of fantasy and wins the special Gran Prix of the jury at the Cannes film festival in 1974. Pasolini has his personal style of making movies. The costumes designed by Danilo Donati are fantastic. The actors are realistic .The music by Ennio Morricone is not what you might expect from a romantic Arabian film, there are no love themes, not much of melodic themes at all. But instead it is one of the most original scores for church organ, harp and flute, besides of course the presence of orchestral music. The compositions for solo organ are quite innovative and the Maestro has proved once again his originality, with the power he knows how to transmit through his music. By the way there is a lot more organ music than in the film. Ennio Morricone has collaborated with Pier Paolo Pasolini in seven movies, including his last controversial film SALO’, OR THE 120 DAYS OF SODOM in 1975. A few weeks before this movie release, the director was murdered.

LA CUGINA

Director Aldo Lado has directed in 1974 the comedy/drama THE COUSIN (LA CUGINA) after a novel by Ercole Patti. Enzo (played by Massimo Ranieri) and Agata (played by the Canadian actress Dayle Haddon) are two cousins who from childhood and later in adolescence abandon themselves in a series of erotic plays so that they will eventually become lovers. But Agata, for her convenience, marries the rich baron Nini Scuderi (played by Christian De Sica). Director Aldo Lado asked Ennio Morricone to write the music also for the film, after all his four previous films: LA CORTA NOTTE DELLE BAMBOLE DI VETRO (1971), CHI L’HA VISTA MORIRE? (1972), LA COSA BUFFA (1972) E SEPOLTA VIVA (1973). Their collaboration will continue for other four movies. Ennio Morricone for this erotic movie has composed very fascinating sensual themes, providing both the orchestrations and the conducting. Oscar Valdambrini with his flugelhorn and Edda Dell'Orso with her sexy voice, have offered the great solo performances. The chorus of I Cantori Moderni di Alessandroni has contributed with the usual background, typical of the music of Morricone from that period. The score has some theme that are presented in various romantic orchestrations. In the film there is also a song played by an uncredited Nilla Pizzi as well a dance music. Enjoy!
