Hot Shots! Part Deux - 06/10 - Review of Tom Daish, submitted at
As you'd expect, this score is immensely strange indeed at times, however, it is often very serious kind of action music. The main theme is quite a catchy and heroic theme for the omnipresent Hot Shots. Aside from the silliness and action there is some moody jazz in Gotta Light? although I suspect the scene was appropriately ridiculous in the film. This then moves onto some nice suspense music and a bit of action with plunking synths in the background. There are definitely moments when you can tell it's by the composer that gave Robocop and Starship Troopers their élan, but otherwise it's a little bit average and not particularly inspiring. I suppose that creating anything genuinely gripping from a comedy like this is somewhat difficult and I think Poledouris has made a valiant effort. The inclusion of some songs and TV show themes on occasion completely grates with the rest of the score. I suppose this is a comedy film and so little comedic, musical inclusions are acceptable, but they do slightly spoil Poledouris' attempt to at least give the music a serious edge. I think this is more one for die-hard Poledouris fans only. It can be quite fun, but in the end there's not a lot to recommend about it over his other action scores.
