Farscape - 04/10 - Review of Tom Daish, submitted at
I must admit that I've not really taken to watching Farscape which is a contemporary and well made variation on the Buck Rogers in the 25th Century type 21st century everyman lost in space after travelling down a wormhole during a test flight. It should be dreadful based on the premise, but is in fact most entertaining, although I can't say I've ever found myself strongly drawn into it. It seems that funky synth scores are all the rage for sci-fi these days. Out with the slightly over pompous Trek strings and horn chords and in with rhythms and weird ethnic instruments. This is possibly as a result of the extremely popular efforts of Christopher Franke on Babylon 5, although he did make things somewhat more operatic.

SubVision is not a group I know anything about, but their main title theme is a very weird combination of grunts, beats and samples that defies description and is memorable for being so odd than being able to actually recall much about it. Their underscore sections start promisingly with the funky, but gloriously over the top Wormhole! from the opening episode. However, from that, things are a little more variable. Tracks such as Goodbye from PK Tech Girl are supposed to be moving, but unfortunately sound a bit too much like cheap Vangelis. On the other hands, later sections such as Parting Comrades manage to cover the synthetic cracks and are considerably more affecting, but there is still something less than satisfying about the whole thing without the images.

Off the top of my head, my only knowledge about Guy Gross is that he wrote the incidental music for the popular and highly entertaining Priscilla Queen of the Desert. This featured large choral sections which played against the beautiful outback scenery and cut through the disco tunes that made up the rest of the music. Gross's background in more orchestral music means a considerably more standard sounding synthetic orchestra which isn't perhaps as interesting as SubVision's curious mixtures, but does win points for more appealing drama.

I am still of the feeling that even what is considered the best television music is often not terribly interesting. Even the much lauded music for the original Twilight Zone written by Messrs Herrmann, Goldsmith and so on I don't feel warrants repeat listens. In this case, there are a few neat tracks, but nothing really stands out as anything terribly dramatic and are best described as fun, rather than particularly good. It's just not an album I can ever imagine myself having a burning desire to listen to. I suspect fans of the series will enjoy the disc, but everyone else might find the quality that bit too variable and interest evaporating long before the end.
