Danny Elfman staat bekend om zijn gekke, drukke rariteitenkabinet van een oeuvre in de wereld van de fantastische films. Maar... Sommersby is een prachtige en warme romantische score, met een verfrissend recht-door-zee karakter.
Inderdaad, rijkelijk spelende strijkers, af en toe gitaarspel en prachtige trompetpassages. Het album laat zich zeer makkelijk beluisteren. Vanaf het prachtige "Main Titles," met het melancholieke hoofdthema, ben je meteen aan de luidsprekers gekluisterd! De (dramatische) romantiek, is teder ("First Love") of groots ("Return Montage"). Met mate voorkomend, en verspreid over het album, zijn passages met energieke country-achtige muziek. Ze passen, hoe opgewekt ook, toch fraai in de serieuze context van de rest van de score. In de "End Credits" bouwen zij tot een mooi crescendo op.
Prachtig ook hoe "Going to Nashville" het hoofdthema op een koninklijke wijze herhaalt: kippenvelmuziek!
Net zoals Edward Scissorhands, kent ook Sommersby een punt waarop het album omslaat naar het onheilspellende en het tragische. Voor Sommersby is het stuk "Mortal Sin" dit moment op de CD. Hierna bouwt de score op tot het dramatische einde...
Een prachtige soundtrack, die net zoals Dolores Claiborne (die wel wat schizofrener geschreven is) in het rijtje thuishoort van Elfmans muziek voor films met een realistischer karakter.

Before listening to the score for Sommersby I didn't think that Danny Elfman could write sweeping romantic and epic music. After listening to it, though, I know he can. And he is really good at it too.
Elfman sets the tone of the score in the "Main Titles" track, which presents a dramatic and beautiful sweeping theme, performed primarily by strings and trumpet, but with softer guest appearances by the guitar. The score then goes on much in the same style, i.e melodic music with epic orchestrations, with frequent setbacks to the main theme. It's very enjoyable listening to, and very calming.
There are, though, a couple of tracks that differ from the rest of the score. "Welcoming", for instance, is a lively cue, perhaps a little folk music inspired, with somewhat harsh strings, that gets softer at the end, but still a little dramatic, along with a tender guitar. "At Work" is also very folk music sounding, with whistle, banjo, guitar, percussion and those harsh strings.
Highlights are the "Main Title" and the two last cues, "Finale" and "End Credits", with their wonderful renditions of the main theme. All in all a very impressive score from Elfman, and we can only hope that he gets more of these "mature" scoring assignments in the future.

Sommersby is geen Elfmanische heroïsche fantasierijke score maar een romantische episch-Horner-achtige score, maar dan met een vleugje Elfman. In hoofdzaak heeft de score een volle warme klank door de vele strijkers, waarbij ik bij het aanzwellen van deze partij strijkers soms aan Rachel Portman moet denken. Boven deze laag met strijkers is vaak, eveneens in het mooie thema, een prachtig helder klinkende trompet te horen. Daarnaast zorgt het gebruik van gitaar in sommige tracks voor een enorme hoeveelheid berusting. De soft dramatische romantische klank wordt afgewisseld met her en der wat opgewektere stukken, die als country en of Iers te kenmerken zijn.
Het klinkt allemaal erg aangenaam, deze score heb ik wel heel wat vaker moeten beluisteren voordat ik hem echt ging waarderen. Maar dat is ie meer dan waard.
