Chéri - 07/10 - Review of Matt C. , submitted at
The music of Cheri offers very little inspired or fresh material to 2009 or to Desplat's film music portfolio thus far - allow me to explain.
To start with the positive aspects of the album, Desplat brings his consistently enjoyable class, charm, intricate writing of timeless melodies and of course a customary waltz. Keeping things flowing for the majority of the run time, Desplat entertains with some comedic liveliness, moments of pure orchestral bliss, but for the most part he will lull you into peaceful tranquility and even sorrow. Another plus is the superb sound quality of the music itself which allows you to fully appreciate the flawless performance given by the London Symphony Orchestra.
On the negative side, Desplat rarely switches up the orchestral voices that he so often employs: piano, celesta, flutes, strings and even the low bass tones that worked so ominously well in his score to Birth. These instruments as well as his distinctive harmonic structures and tonalities are found in overwhelming surplus, causing Cheri to be virtually unidentifiable from his previous works such as: the Curious Case of Benjamin Button, Julie and Julia, and The Queen.
The only exception to this rule is also the only real annoyance: a couple of cartoon-ish marches that serve to throw off the flow in the first and third tracks, creating a distraction rather than a welcome new addition to this score.
All of this being said, if you fully intend to purchase and enjoy this soundtrack, it may be necessary to purge Desplat's past efforts from your memory or just simply accept the score for what it is.
If you are a die-hard fan, and are not swayed by basic recapitulation of all that has come before, with a couple of notable highlights, Cheri just may serve to please you, due to the high standards of quality and class Desplat sets for each project that he works on.
Otherwise, if you are not in favor of playing mind games with yourself and are just getting plain worn out by regurgitation, even if it is by one of the most impressive composers working today, you should look else where.
Michelle Pfeiffer

Performed by London Symphony Orchestra

Set in the luxurious demi-monde of pre-First World War Paris, Chéri is the story of the love affair between the beautiful retired courtesan Léa (Michelle Pfeiffer) and Chéri (Rupert Friend), the son of her old colleague and rival, Madame Peloux (Kathy Bates). Léa has educated the spoilt and callow boy in the ways of love, but after six years Madame Peloux has secretly arranged a marriage between Chéri and Edmée (Felicity Jones), daughter of another rich courtesan. As the inevitable moment of parting approaches, Léa and Chéri try to come to terms with their imminent separation, but the roots of their life of ease and pleasure reach deeper than even they imagine and they begin to understand, too late, how much they mean to one another. CHÉRI is the latest film from Oscar-nominated director Stephen Frears (The Queen, The Grifters).

The sumptuous score is by Oscar nominee, Alexandre Desplat.

Miramax will open CHÉRI nationwide on June 26.2009
