The Pursuit of Happyness - 08/10 - Review of Jason FLZ, submitted at (English)
In 2005 the bittersweet-yet-inspirational story of Chris Gardner was brought to the big screen with much praise and financial success. The story revolves around Gardner, an out of luck salesman who eventually loses his home, his wife, and his belongings. Forced to live on the streets and in shelters with his son, Gardner bravely fights to rebuild his life. Pursuit of Happyness is simply a great film, branded with the message 'Never Give Up.' Will Smith and Jaden Smith's portrayals of a father and his son were Oscar worthy, to put it lightly. For the score to the film, came Spanish composer Andrea Guerra who provided an emotional score.

Pursuit of Happyness makes great use of bizarre instruments mixed with the piano and orchestra. The result? A mix between James Newton Howard in terms of emotion and depth and Thomas Newman in terms of zaniness. The soundtrack offers two main themes. First is the lighthearted melody heard in 'Opening' and later 'Happyness'. This theme represents hope and anytime Chris can catch a lucky break. The secondary theme for the film represents the more dramatic moments of the film through the use of a piano. 'Trouble at Home', 'Linda Leaves', 'Locked Out', etc. are all dramatic and emotional. Fortunately, Guerra doesn't delve too far into the more depressing aspects of the score and uses a perfect balance of more upbeat themes. 'Being Stupid', 'Running', and 'Park Chase' all feature quirky, Thomas Newman sounding motifs.

Overall, Pursuit of Happyness's album presentation is very well rounded. The score never becomes too mellow and sad, and manages to remain fun and quirky at the same time (using the sound effects in the style of Thomas Newman is a weird choice that might distract the listener). Andrea Guerra manages to present a fairly good score, although there really isn't anything too special about it. A nice little listen on the side but nothing extremely groundbreaking or exciting about. Easily put: a competent score.
The Pursuit of Happyness - 08/10 - Review of Tim Horemans, submitted at (Dutch)
The Pursuit of Happyness is het jongste succes van Will Smith.

In The Pursuit of Happyness, Chris Gardner (Will Smith) is a family man struggling to make ends meet. Despite his valiant attempts to help keep the family afloat, the mother (Thandie Newton) of his five-year-old son Christopher (Jaden Christopher Syre Smith) is buckling under the constant strain of financial pressure. No longer able to cope, she reluctantly decides to leave.

Chris, now a single father, continues to doggedly pursue a better-paying job using every sales skill he knows. He lands an internship at a prestigious stock brokerage firm, and although there is no salary, he accepts, hopeful he will end the program with a job and a promising future. Without a financial cushion, Chris and his son are soon evicted from their apartment and forced to sleep in shelters, bus stations, bathrooms or wherever they can find refuge for the night.

Despite his troubles, Chris continues to honor his commitment as a loving and caring father, using the affection and trust his son has placed in him as an impetus to overcome the obstacles he faces.
