UK Film Event: Planet of The Apes - Live

Part of Meltdown festival curated by David Byrne, Royal Festival Hall, Friday 28 August 2015

Franklin Schaffner’s startlingly original 1968 sci-fi classic, with one of the most famous shock endings of cinema history, will be brought vividly to the concert stage in this world premiere of the complete film, with live orchestral score conducted by Robert Ziegler.

Planet of the Apes, a film that whose social subtexts seem as relevant now as ever, stars Charlton Heston as an astronaut who crash-lands on an unknown planet where apes rule and humans are enslaved. Roddy McDowell and Kim Hunter co-star as the intelligent apes, brought to life by the Oscar-winning make-up artist John Chambers.

Jerry Goldsmith’s ground-breaking music challenges, charms and excites in equal measure – a thrilling, Oscar-nominated tour-de-force for orchestra. Goldsmith, one of the most prolific soundtrack composers of all time, scored over 200 films, with an adoring fanbase worldwide. He enjoyed long associations with Steven Spielberg, Ridley Scott and Roman Polanski, and is best known for his work for sci-fi and horror. To name a few his scores include Alien, The Omen, Poltergeist, Logan’s Run, Gladiator and Gremlins.
