SCL Hosts Reception Honoring the 2010 Oscar® Nominees

Last night the Society of Composers and Lyricists, alongside the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences (AMPAS), ASCAP, BMI, and SESAC, held its annual Pre-champagne reception honoring this year’s Oscar® nominees. The A-list affair drew in some of the biggest names in the industry including Hans Zimmer, John Powell, A.R, Rahman, Alexandre Desplat, and 19-time nominee and 8-time Oscar® winner, Alan Menken.

The event in Beverly Hills, planned as a gathering encouraging camaraderie between composers and musicians, was well enjoyed by those in attendance. Other nominees present for this reception included Trent Reznor and Atticus Ross for The Social Network ; Glenn Slater for Tangled ; and Tom Douglas, Hillary Lindsey and Troy Verges for Country Strong. (Notably absent was nominee Randy Newman.)

Dan Foliart, president of the SCL, introduced the nominees on stage where they had a chance to say a few thank-you words. Alexandre Desplat, who is nominated in the Best Original Score category for his work in “The King’s Speech,” appeared incredibly enthusiastic as he thanked the organizers and other people. This year’s class of nominees posed for group photos. A very special moment came when Ronni Chasen's name was mentioned. The veteran publicist who represented A-list stars and filmmakers, including nominee Hans Zimmer, and who had been fatally shot in Beverly Hills back in November, was remembered and given a round of applause by the crowd.

The Oscar® contenders slowly ran off to other engagements, getting ready for tonight’s big show, the 83rd Annual Academy Awards, at the Kodak Theatre in Los Angeles. The ceremony will be televised worldwide (ABC, 8ET/5PT).

With The King’s Speech and The Social Network being widely considered the front-runners to take home most of the awards, people will be eagerly anticipating the Best Original Score announcement.
